After a stressful couple of months, things are finally looking up around here. Money is still tight, but my union (the NUJ) has really come through for me and is helping me with my legal case (for the usual reasons I'm obliged to be vague about that here). The Caravan in India are making positive noises about my work for them, and The Scotsman just gave Eye For Film a lovely wee plug. I still need to find more work, but at least some stuff is going well. I'm also hoping to get some of my writing accepted by academic journals before the summer is out.
An unexpected afternoon off is enabling me to catch up on a few things today. I'm not happy aboutwhy it happened - an Orange March means that it's simply not safe for the transgender meeting I had scheduled to happen - but free time is free time and I still appreciate it. On Monday I met with the Equality and Human Rights Commission about transgender media issues and that went fairly well, so at least we're making some progress. It was a nice civilised follow-up to the most chaotic Pride march I have ever attended, last Saturday. It wasn't much fun travelling over the cobbles in my wheelchair but I did catch up with friends and useful people (not that my friends aren't useful...) and afterwards I went up to the press centre at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for a bit to catch up with my writers and do some business. On Tuesday night Erith drove me back through to Edinburgh and we had our post-festival Eye For Film drinks. Unfortunately Stuart was unwell and had to leave early, which had me worried, but I still enjoyed talking with people. We had a very strange drive home under an oddly-shaped blood red moon.
The weather has been pretty tough for me lately. I've coped fairly well with the heat during the day (it's easier thanks to the medication I'm on these days), but at night it's made the pain a lot worse and I've been having to drug myself to sleep. There was a good storm yesterday, so hopefully it won't last much longer.
I'll try to write more here soon.
